Teach Phonics using the Kinect

KinectPhonicsHope you have all had a good Christmas and Boxing day. Looking forward to the new year? I know I am Smile! Can’t wait to see what this new year brings with the Kinect and the new apps coming available!

Before Christmas I started speaking to a teacher called Marc Faulder (@marc_faulder). He was interested in using the Kinect to teach early years and asked me about the possibilities of using the Kinect. He wanted to make use of phonics. Me being me, I offered to develop an application for him to use with his students. I’m excited to see what his students think and the impact.

I took my original spelling test and re-developed it so that it would be more user friendly for people. It allows the user to change the sets of letters they want to use. For example, if they use the drop down menu, you can now select only a few letters to appear. Other features included are that it allows you to use 10 customizable pictures. In short the application has the following:

  • Compatibility for BETA 2.0
  • Pictures (Just paste over the picture 1, picture 2 etc.. in the run me folder)
  • Custom words (Open the test file and list 10 spellings, make sure lower case)
  • Angle changer (I realise that early years are smaller – move slider, click submit)

Have a look at the video below to see the file in it’s early stages. You can download the full version here.
